The GDPR stands for: the General Data Protection Regulation. It is the Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC.
GDPR, also known as the General Data Protection Regulation, applies in all EU / EEA countries. The GDPR entered into force on 25 May 2018.
The GDPR is comprised by 99 Articles. But also, of 173 Recitals.
Companies, organizations and authorities must comply with the GDPR in all processing of personal data that belongs to EU citizens. In some cases, GDPR also applies to the processing of such personal data that is carried out by a natural person.
In the event of non-compliance with the GDPR, two levels of administrative penalty fees may be imposed by the Supervisory Authority. These levels are as follows:
Up to € 10 million, or, in the case of an undertaking, 2% of its entire annual global revenue of the preceding fiscal year – whichever is higher.
Up to € 20 million, or, in the case of an undertaking, 4% of its entire annual global revenue of the preceding fiscal year – whichever is higher.
Examples of personal data are the following: names, telephone numbers, profile pictures and other things that can be identify a living natural person.
